Ashtanga Yoga Boston

Ashtanga Yoga is the system of yoga preserved and transmitted by its great exponent, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (Guruji) of Mysore, India. It is designed to purify the body and still the mind. The practice is characterized by Vinyasa, the precise coordination of movement, with breath, from posture to posture.

Ashtanga Yoga Boston was founded in 2006.  We strive to teach Ashtanga yoga in the traditional way, as it has been and continues to be taught at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI) in Mysore, India.

Most of our classes are taught “Mysore-style” — with hands-on adjustments as each student needs, and with minimal talking.  Beginning and experienced students practice side-by-side.  Once a week, on Friday, we offer led classes where students are verbally led through the Primary series of Ashtanga yoga.

All of our teachers have a long-term commitment to the practice, and teach in the way they have learned from Guruji and/or Sharath at KPJAYI in Mysore. All classes are taught or overseen by teachers who have attained Level 2 Authorization from KPJAYI.

“Upon the destruction of impurities as a result of the practice of yoga, the lamp of knowledge arises. This culminates in discriminative discernment.”
—Yoga Sutras 2.28, translation by Edwin F. Bryant
